My Students
Our students are 9th, 10th and 11th graders (we are a new public school, so 12th grade will be added next year), most of whom come from high poverty, high stress living situations. Many have parents who are ill, addicted, incarcerated or deceased, working several jobs or struggling to find work. Many have been exposed to sometimes extreme violence. Some of our students, though born here, come from families with undocumented adults and live with the fear of seeing their families split in two. But all of our kids hope to overcome the trauma of their lives to become successful in whatever way they define this and our teaching staff is here to support them.
Although the neighborhood in which our school sits is considered high crime and the sound of gunshots echoes through the streets, we have tried to make our building a safe haven.
One of the ways in which we do this is through the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is one of the core values of our school. As a certified Mindful School teacher, I have shared these healing practices with students and staff alike.
My Project
Our high school, determined to highlight healing over punishment, started a Mindfulness Room for our highly stressed students. Students have visited the room to practice guided meditations or do yoga when they feel they are becoming stressed or behaving in a way that might lead to unskillful behavior. Through the generosity of our local mindfulness community (via DonorsChoose), we were able to purchase MP3 players on which to load a variety of mindfulness meditations so our students can choose the practice that is most suitable for them. We are so grateful!
We now need additional headphones, so meditating in our often noisy school will be easier, cleaner for the yoga mats and Elmer's glitter glue so our students can make mind jars to help them practice at home.
We were blessed with a few DonorsChoose gift cards, so this project is almost paid for. These seemingly ordinary items are destined to provide our deserving kids with extraordinary experiences.
