Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 17 4th-6th grade students who are incredibly diverse in their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs. I could write a 40 page document on each student (oh wait, I already do) and I still don't think that would truly and completely encompass the entirety of each student. My students academic capabilities range from pre-k to grade level; their social-emotional needs vary from extremely underdeveloped to having more streets smarts than your average 40 year-old; and their behavior both towards their peers and myself can go from hot to cold in a matter of moments.
With these varies skills and ability levels, it is very difficult to create individualized instruction and materials for each student since my school district does not provide curriculum.
I have spent a large portion of my paycheck, time outside of school, and mental effort on designing curriculum that is individualized and appropriate for my students. Some days it feels like I have nothing left to give.
I am aiming to buy curriculum that can be used for a multitude of years for bounteous students. I want to design a classroom with meaningful and advantageous learning in order to best equip my students for their futures.
My Project
Support me in supporting my students to become Ready Readers. Due to my students various grade levels and even more diverse needs, I require multi-grade level curricular resources. Some of my students have learning disabilities which has inhibited their reading abilities, putting them 2-5 grade levels behind their like-aged peers. Furthermore, I also service students with behavioral needs that are academically on grade level but their behavior has impeded their learning.
My students are placed with me for a multitude of purposes ranging from academic to behavioral.
With this, my students reading and comprehension levels vary from far below grade level to grade level. This makes for great difficulty in designing and purchasing curriculum.
The purchase of these reading tools will aid in my students becoming ready readers for their future.
