Making Reading Smooth Sailing

My Students

Most of my kindergarten students started the school year learning the basics -- the alphabet song and how to write their name. After seven months of hard work, my students have become readers and they are on the brink of becoming truly fluent readers!

My students are a curious and caring group of kindergarteners who work every day to grow their brains and help their classroom team succeed.

They attend a large primary charter school in an urban school district in Illinois. A majority of the students in my class and school live in low income households. While the kids, their families, and our school operate as one team and family committed to seeing each student to and through college, finding the resources to help them get there can be challenging.

My Project

In order for my students to reach their reading potential, they need to not only be exposed to lots and lots of books and opportunities to read, they need to hear every sound in their reading. Whisper phones are amazing little tools that magnify the reader's voice while reading. They work with even a whisper! This enables students to hear every sound that they read. As they hear the details in their reading, they are able to adjust their reading to match the printed words. Additionally, whisper phones encourage students to add expression to their reading as they hear the intricacies of their voice -- expression and comprehension go hand in hand!

If my kindergarteners leave kindergarten as fluent readers, they will surely be ready for first grade.

Whisper phones help students to focus on blending sounds, reading fluently, and adding expression to their reading. Students love whisper phones and they won't only encourage stronger reading skills, they'll encourage confident readers.
