Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Being in a low socio-economic community, it is important that our students are exposed to a variety of experiences through literature. Our campus and correspondingly my future 2025-2026 class have a high number of students with special needs. Many students are also bilingual and are only exposed to the English language and literature while at school. Our school maintains high expectations for all students, and I am looking to enhance their experience and encourage a love of reading regardless of their background.

I have used novel studies for 9 years to engage students and have seen tremendous growth in their passion for reading!

After reading research articles based on enhancing the love for reading in young children found a common theme was found fantasy, rich vocabulary, and life lessons through characters that the reader can relate to. Harry Potter was a beloved book series for me and my daughter, and hopefully, now, I will be able to share this magical experience through reading with my fifth-grade students. I am especially excited about the discussions regarding character choice and behaviors, and how this will tie in directly with the social-emotional learning program that will be used in the classroom this upcoming year.
