Making Reading Comfortable

My students need a comfortable, colorful carpet to sit on for our reading and community time.

My Students

Imagine walking into class on the first day of 3rd grade and being called to sit on a thin, gray carpet remnant purchased from Home Depot. This is what my students last year had to endure throughout the entire year, which took the fun and comfort out of reading time. This year will be different.

I teach at a turnover school in a low income area in Michigan.

Two years ago, it was one of the lowest performing elementary schools in the state, and we are now rapidly climbing up. The school is in a high-poverty area and many of our students see school as an escape. Our students view school as a fun, safe place where their creativity and achievement is encouraged on a daily basis. They have an inspiring yearning to learn and are taught to be self-motivated and take ownership over their school and education. Because we have extended school days and an 11-month school year, our students spend a great deal of time at school and think of it as a home away from home.

My Project

Because my students spend the majority of their waking hours in my classroom, they deserve to feel comfortable while learning. All of my students thrive on taking ownership over their learning materials and space. A large portion of our day is spent on the carpet so my students should have a comfortable, spacious carpet to sit on. This tiled, colorful carpet will give my students the comfort and space they need to be fully engaged in instruction. The tiles allow students to each have an individual square that they know is theirs. These squares provide them with the structure they need to transition and sit comfortably as a whole class. The carpet will also be used as a space where students can relax and read independently by the library. This encourages students to choose to read more and allows them to feel at home while reading. In order to focus on learning, students need to have a comfortable learning environment so they can listen and engage, rather than squirm in their seat.
