Cellular respiration is one of the fundamental processes of life! All living organisms perform cell respiration, which converts glucose into usable energy and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. By combining yeast and sugar and collecting the resulting carbon dioxide in a gas syringe, students can directly observe this amazing process.
Enzyme-catalyzed reactions are all around us.
Enzymes are proteins that speed up the rate of chemical reactions. Cellular respiration depends on a library of enzymes. Another enzyme-dependent reaction is the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by the enzyme catalase, which is found in most living organisms. The waste product of this reaction is oxygen gas. Students can directly observe enzyme catalysis by combining yeast and hydrogen peroxide and capturing the resulting oxygen in a gas syringe.
With these simple ingredients of yeast, hydrogen peroxide, and gas syringes, I can make the chemical reactions of life visible to students and help fuel their interest in their bodies and the natural world.
