Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Post-Covid my kids have been forced back into a world where some are still struggling to connect with their friends. As a result many use their phones as a coping mechanism. Crochet club happens during lunch time. Lunch time and the lunch room in HS can be a treacherous place where the pressure to sit with in-crowds and cool kids weigh heavy.
Crochet club is a safe space to allow students to both learn a new skill and make friends and bond over shared interests, while taking a break from the phone.
Together, we are all the cool crochet kids.
Crochet club provides students with all materials, however, at present, I am running dangerously low on yarn, as our students' creativity have caught on fire! They are planning to make scarves, gloves and hats for donation, however, without help, this may not be possible. Budget cuts have hit NYC extremely hard. These cuts affect students in the Bronx at even a deeper level as we are already fighting for all the resources we are trying to keep.
