This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of our students in West Chicago are second or third generation Mexican Americans, whose native language is Spanish. The families work hard to provide opportunities for their children, but music lessons and traditional music ensemble participation is relatively low.
Adding mariachi to the traditional band, orchestra, and choir classes at our school, has engaged families in an entirely new way.
Parents, grandparents, and children connect across generations, and often across many miles through the music. The students are excited to come to school and learn, the families are happy to come to school and hear their children perform.
My Project
Our mariachi students have been working hard to improve their vocal technique and increase their confidence when singing solos. We have been blessed with a new sound system through a previous Donors Choose project, but we are still using old microphones and cables collected from various places.
Singing alone, especially in middle school, can be challenging, but the right equipment will help boost the students' confidence.
With new equipment, used only for mariachi, we will be able work with our soloists on mic technique, and how to interact with the audience. We will also teach all of the ensemble members how to set up and adjust the sound equipment, which is an important skill for all musicians who perform in multiple venues.
