Making Our Phones Go Further: Smartphone Lens Kits
My students need lens kits that attach to their smartphones so that they can leverage the technology they already own to participate in the photography unit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are seniors at a school in a high poverty area, and are curious, enthusiastic, and excited for the future. The majority of them will be the first in their families to attend college, and they have worked hard to make that happen.
Many of my students have had limited art instruction.
This year, they have gotten to draw and paint, as well as learn about the visual history of humanity. Their growth as visual artists this year has been tremendous and their confidence continues to build with each project.
My Project
My senior art students have been getting to experiment in a variety of traditional 2d mediums this year, but I want to give them the chance to try digital photography. Over the course of this project, students will identify a theme within their community, document it photographically, and then edit their photos digitally.
The vast majority of students at my school have smartphones, and for this photography unit, I want to leverage those phones and their cameras as a tool for more than just Instagram.
The cameras inherent in their phones are already better than the single-digit mega-pixel digital cameras of my youth, but ability to play with optics is something that is missing.
These simple clip-on lens kits will give students the ability to manipulate the images that they capture before they import them into our computers. Each kit comes with a wide angle lens for landscapes and architectural photography, a macro lens to zoom in on the smallest details of an object, and a fish-eye lens that they can use to distort their photographs with.
With the 15 kits, I want to give my students the option to check one out for 2 days at a time and document the world that they live in. As artists, many of them have experimented with art as a means for social commentary, and political protest, and photography skills will be another important tool for them to leverage as they continue to grow artistically.
