Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

They say "practice makes perfect" and our Academic Decathlon students perfectly embody that motto. In a "TED Talk" dominated classroom, we practice the art of public speaking and strive to become better, more efficient orators. We want to make our own TED Talks!

Our Academic Decathlon team is a group of 10-15 proud, self-professed nerds that work tirelessly to compete fearlessly with other schools (including selective enrollment and suburban) in our 3 annual competitions.

They are hungry for success and work very hard to become bona fide scholars and effective orators. We watch a lot of TED Talks to get inspired, but we'd like to make our own and stay competitive. In the last 5 years we have placed 3rd and 5th place repeatedly at the State level Academic Decathlon competition and wish to repeat that again this season. My students are all Hispanic, and virtually all receive free lunch. They are sophomores, juniors and seniors and they all strive to be the best they can be in the middle of a chaotic urban high school that sometimes presents challenges for personal growth. They want to succeed and become more, though sometimes, we as a group, lack the appropriate access to the newest and most competitive, yet efficient training technologies.

My Project

My students practice speaking in front of an audience almost daily. We write and practice prepared speeches, as well as impromptu ones. Their hearts leap out of their chest of nervousness and anxiety and it is the most amazing of transformations to see them grow as confident speakers. They must develop this skill not only as part of our course, but also to get them prepared for group discussions and forums in college and life beyond. With the Swivl device for recording video, as well as an attached iPad mini, we will be able to record all students while they present and use the videos to reflect and improve the skill of public speaking. This equipment represents a new generation of classroom aids in using video that allow students to see themselves as speech judges or others see them as they present. It will give them a chance to grow and critique themselves to create dynamic changes in their voice, volume, posture and presentation technique.

Public speaking is a social and academic skill that we seldom purposely teach in high school.

We hope that in many of our classes we touch upon it with group presentations, poster or PowerPoint presentations; however, the art of public speaking is one that NEEDS to be taught to all high school students. While our small team is a fraction of that larger group, your help will undoubtedly facilitate this process and allow them to see themselves grow as confident, mature public speakers.
