Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The first day of a new school year is a big event, especially when it's your very first day of school ever! It's exciting and scary for students and parents alike, but my trusty camera and letter stamps are the First Day Jitters cure! Why not continue the picture-taking, letter-stamping fun all year long?
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's who are motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily for English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Aside from the 3-4 adult-led activities, my classroom has 15 independent centers that change with each new theme.
Pre-Kindergarten is usually my students' first school experience and reactions ricochet between apprehension, enthusiasm, fear, reluctance, and relief. Parents go through their own processes of adjustment, too. Our new adventures will continue throughout the school year and memorializing milestones with photographs will calm nerves and provide a wealth of learning opportunities.
Early Literacy, including writing skills, is a big part of Pre-K, yet some students have never held a pencil.
My Project
Photography is a great way to record special class activities such as the first day of school, field trips, and celebrations. Photos promote oral language and build self-confidence. Ask a child to 'talk about a recent field trip' and the results are mixed. Some students will provide a detailed narrative, others a sentence or two, and the rest will struggle uncomfortably to come up with a few words. Present a child with a personal photograph from the trip and, as his face lights up, the story flows.
Photos also provide a link for parents unable to attend these events and for those without a camera. Photographs can be used in other ways: to celebrate an achievement, provide documentation for portfolios, and to capture a special moment.
My students are expected to write their names and copy words by year's end. Colored ink pads with alphabet stamps have become one of my favorite secret weapons! They provide students with a sense of accomplishment as they work towards mastery of these tricky skills.
I want my students to begin their school careers calmly and confidently.
Photos provide myriad opportunities for learning, but we need the resources to print them. HP ink and photo paper will allow a quick turnaround time for maximum effectiveness. Colored ink pads will promote writing skills as students develop the fine motor skills necessary to achieve the ultimate Pre-K goal that includes the right to announce, "I wrote my name today!!"
