Making Numbers Make Sense

My students need an array of math resources and a printer to help foster their growth in number sense by creating individualized learning experiences.

My classroom is the home of upward of thirty rambunctious and spirited fourth grade students in each one of my math and science rotations, which makes individual attention and rapid feedback hard to come by, but everyone is always in need of my individual attention.

Approximately 70% of my students are eligible for special education services, which presents various unique challenges in itself. The street my school is located on, is also the location of a cluster of extended stay motels, mobile home communities, battered women’s shelters, mental health facilities, and low income housing apartments and homes. These surroundings may be the colorful origins of my students, but we are determined to ensure they will not be the bleak ending of them.

My Project

By utilizing Hot Dots my students will get the automatic feedback they desperately need while trying to master an individualized set of math skills independently. A high functioning printer and Hot Dot kits will enable me to create activities that cater to the specific learning needs of my students and make them attractive, which will encourage student engagement. My students will have group learning caddies, which will be filled with various math manipulative's, resources, and activities they will use in small group center rotations, individual practice, and during whole group instruction as a resource. These items will be used to foster the mastery of number sense, which is a foundational concept needed in all levels of math mastery. This project will enable me to go back grade levels with my students and close their achievement gaps and remediate their deficits. My classroom will be filled with great mathematicians, with a strong foundation in number sense.

Donations to this project will not only help improve the educational outcomes of my students today, but will also help improve the future of their community.

Students equipped with this foundational understanding, will be more successful in their later math years and less likely to drop out. A solid foundation in number sense makes grade level content more comprehendible, so students won’t invest exorbitant amounts of time in basic arithmetic, but instead focus on complex math reasoning.
