My students need a class set of nonfiction texts, like Jeannette Walls's "The Glass Castle" and Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle."

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of our students are entering college without the critical thinking skills needed to be successful. To combat the growing number of high schoolers who enter college "not ready," it is essential that we provide them with the texts in high school that will challenge them to think and analyze.
My students attend a non-screened, traditional public school in the poorest Congressional district in the country.
They work hard to stay academically focused in school while their lives outside are often chaotic, unpredictable, and emotionally draining. As sophomores, not only are they feeling the increased pressure of high school expectations and graduation requirements, they are also receiving multiple responsibilities from their families in addition to the normal pressures that teens face today.
For many of my students, our school provides them with not only a safe space, but also structure. At school, my students can dare to dream beyond their circumstances without having to be deflated moments later. They work hard to meet expectations, even when they may not have the resources and skills at hand to do so. They ask questions, seek help, and strive to be better people. When things get tough, they grit their teeth and persevere.
My Project
With the Common Core standards slowly transitioning into high schools all around the country, it is essential that we smoothly and fluidly transition our students' way of thinking and learning as well. The Common Core pushes our students to not just graduate from high schools, but to truly be "college-ready." As an English teacher, this means incorporating more nonfiction texts into the curriculum.
For many students, the idea of reading nonfiction can not only be daunting, it can be downright boring. I want to prove my students wrong by providing them with high-interest nonfiction texts that they can relate to and connect with. The books that I have selected will speak to them, particularly because the people in these books dream, feel, and think like them. These people have also persevered and pushed through challenges, and sometimes, made hard sacrifices.
Currently, my school does not have the funding needed to update classroom texts. My students need new books so that they can learn!
With your generous donations, you will be able to rekindle in my students their love of reading and, most importantly, a love of books.
Technology is on the verge of driving books into extinction and it has become even more essential for us to remind kids how wonderful it is to hold a book in your hands and to treat it as a dear friend. I have no doubt that your small gift to our classroom will be the catalyst to many life-changing experiences in my students' lives.
