My students need 22 cartons of tri-fold presentation boards and 22 packs of construction paper to compete in both our school National History Day Fair and the district competition in April.
I teach 11th grade U.S. History in a public charter high school in Washington, DC. 100% of the students are African American and 95% of my students come from Wards 7 and 8. Unfortunately, this is one of the areas most plagued by crime and poverty in the District. The resources available to the students in surrounding areas are not afforded to my students--resources that many of us take for granted.
This year, we are participating in a year-long competition--National History Day--with other high schools around the District and across the country. This is the first time our school has participated! Since the first week of school, my students have been working on this college-level research process--from selecting their topic (this year's topic is the Individual in History), doing background research to understand the context of their individual in history, and finding primary source documents that give more insight into how their individual contributed to history. They will soon synthesize all of this information and write a research paper. Finally, after they've done intensive researching and writing, they must create a display board to showcase what they have learned and present it to the judges. This is where we really need support.
We do not have the money to purchase display boards and materials. These supplies will ensure that my students can focus strictly on the research process and not on how they're going to find supplies to showcase their hard work.
Please make National History Day possible in our classroom. Despite whether or not my students win in the District competition, they will all have researched and written a college-level paper and presented it--something they can all be proud of.
