This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our elementary school, located in the South Bronx, serves students from Pre-Kindergarten to fifth grade. Our students are opinionated, thoughtful, and creative. They appreciate that the arts provide opportunities to create and tell stories.
Our students jump at the chance to make art, dance, sing, and act and we are working to build a complete arts program that will fuel their need for creative expression.
They see themselves as artists and we are in need of resources to support that vision.
Students in our school participate in visual arts and chorus classes as well as a musical theater program. Every year, our third, fourth, and fifth graders perform in a musical production which is one of our major events for the school year.
My Project
Our school is in the third year of working with Disney Musicals in Schools to develop a sustainable musical theater program. In June 2020, we will be putting on a production of Frozen Jr. Our student performers are learning about the dedication, practice and teamwork that it takes to put on a live musical. Our student crew is learning about set design and theater tech. To grow our program, we will be teaching our student crew to sew costumes with a sewing machine and easy to use fabrics. We will use the lighting elements to transform our auditorium into a winter wonderland. We are in need of new microphones that will be used exclusively for performances to prevent the wear and tear of daily use at school assemblies.
Our students will be able to have a total musical theater experience both on stage and behind-the-scenes with this new equipment and materials.
Outside of the school setting, most of our kids do not get the opportunity to participate in the performing arts (neither as viewers nor as performers). We are excited to continue to have the chance to expose them to new experiences that they can carry with them to future grade levels and, hopefully, beyond.
