Making Music, Making Progress

My students need musical instruments including Thunder Tubes, an Ocean Drum, a Lollipop Drum, a Cabasa and a Log Drum. They also need four instrument mounts.

My Students

Music Therapy is the best part of my students' week. It is a chance for them to express themselves, move their bodies, and feel a sense of agency. For students with severe, multiple disabilities, none of those things come easily, but music therapy makes it happen!

The multiple disabilities my students face include cerebral palsy, autism, Rett Syndrome and brain injury.

Nearly all of my students move with the help of wheelchairs and speak by using special technology. Yet they are in many ways typical teenagers. They love music. They spend quite a bit of their times listening to or making music. Music makes the impossible become possible. Music makes disabilities fade into the background.

My Project

To be honest, we returned from summer break to discover some of our beloved music therapy instruments were missing,---not to mention that the rest of our instruments were worn out, and we currently have no assistive devices, like instrument mounts to make playing music more accessible. So even the instruments we have left aren't very "playable." We need a Cabasa, an Ocean Drum, a Log Drum, a Lollipop Drum, and Thunder Tubes. We also need four different types of devices to hold our instruments in place so the students can play them more independently.

Music Therapy isn't just the highlight of my students' week, it is also the highlight of mine.

As the teacher of such amazing students with such severe challenges, nothing makes my week more than seeing them happy, active, engaged, and creating instead of depending. Please help make that happen for my students!
