My students need a way of making and recording their own music. To do this they need a good quality microphone and a pair of headphones.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My music students are fantastic! They are always so positive in all that they do. They love music and the feeling that it gives them. They give off this positive vibe despite coming from tough and impoverished backgrounds. They are some of the most humble and appreciative people that I have met.
My students attend an urban high school in Utah.
Our city has historically been a gang-infested area. Crime has been high and there have been many times when teachers didn't feel safe in our school. But a few years ago our city took some real initiative to decrease crime and enhance public education. The citizens supported a bond to rebuild the two high schools which were falling apart, and were not conducive to student learning. Our city has now been named by a popular magazine as one of the best places in the country to raise a family.
Our new school building has given the students a new sense of pride and many of the previous gang problems are being left outside the doors.
Poverty is still a major problem, but our students are coming to school ready to learn and improve their circumstances in life.
My Project
My music students love to create. I have recently introduced them into software that allows them to record, loop, and mix audio recordings to create their own music.
To help them do this I have secured and prepared a practice room to become a miniature recording studio. I have a computer that students can use to record, mix, and produce their very own audio recordings.
Where I am falling short is with the actual microphone. The one that we have is cheap and does not give a good quality sound.
At our school we have Concert Band, Jazz Band, String Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and a Bagpipe Corps. All of these classes would have access to this studio to make recordings of themselves playing their instruments. If we get this microphone I envision them spending more time practicing, working together, and hopefully putting their time into something wonderful and creative instead of the destructive things that were once so easily accessible in this area.
The donations for this project would give my students the ability to take their music one step further.
Instead of solely relying on other composers' sheet music to play, they can begin to create their own music. With the digital age well underway, they can now even put their music out there for the world to hear and experience. Perhaps best yet, the music that they create can be saved and be a lasting part of them long after they leave high school.
