Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school has an enrollment of 1,100 students, Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. Developing strong analytical thinkers, and readers through active discussions and issues that are important to them is the foundation of teaching. Despite the violence that occurs in and around the Chicago area, my students come to school convinced they can make a difference in the communities they represent. I'm inspired by students I have not seen yet.
To continue to drive their learning, students require engaging text and resources that will challenge and sustain their learning.
Approximately 10% of the student population receives special education services. Ninety-four percent are considered low-income and receive free or reduced meals at school throughout the day. Student population is 84% Hispanic and 16% African American. Twenty-three percent of our school population is considered Limited English Proficient.
My Project
My Project
Music helps create a classroom environment of creativity, strengthens memory skills and builds on concepts and ideas being taught in English Language Arts.
It is a natural part of my students outside lives that I want to bring into the classroom. Music allows my students to take risks to learn in an atmosphere that is tailored to how they express themselves in an out of the classroom. A good dose of music helps to bridge their everyday musical experiences with subject matter material they are learning in school. I would also add that it helps make the brain more receptive to deeper critical thinking.
Throughout this project we are reading to learn how the beat was made. We are connecting Hip Hop and Opera to Shakespeare's writings. We will learn the history of the metronome and use it to create our own beasts, while counting the beat in sonnets we are reading and learning during class. We are using our IPAD to write music using online resources such as Incredibox which allows us to compose our own unique beats. Music is a casual everyday experience for my students that I can build on to explicitly teach in English Language Arts.
