Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Anyone who walks into our school building feels a unique sense of community. The students at my school are highly motivated to learn and be creative. They are well behaved with the support of teachers who are willing to collaborate with the best interest of the students in mind. Our school is 81% Hispanic and we work hard to teach the English language. More importantly, my school is Title I with 75% of the students on free or reduced-priced lunch.

Students love coming to music each week to be energized by singing, moving, or playing instruments.

Most of the time, music is a breath of fresh air for some of the struggling students because it is the “universal” language. Twice over the past few years, we have been a place where students and families seeking refuge from disaster in Puerto Rico have been able to enroll. There is also a great deal of emphasis on using technology within the classroom to help the students learn.

My Project

Each year around Valentine's Day, we hold a special concert at our school called "The Concert for Friendship". Students prepare for this performance by working together to create something musical.

For this year's performance, I would like to add some special light-up effects that will certainly fun, but at the same time will teach important musical concepts.

The different colors of the Firestix will be used to show contrasting musical elements such as separate rhythmic or melodic parts within the piece of music we are using it for. The Firestix light up as they are played on the drums and make for a flashy and fun piece of music. They can also be used to show off contrasting sections in a song. The tape will be used to cover other instruments used throughout the concert, and they will glow under the blacklights.

Using these creative light-up ideas isn't just for impressing an audience. They will help to make learning fun and engaging at any time of year!
