Urban students often are overlooked and mine are no exception! This is the first time these students are going to receive their own music class and we are in need of so many things. From supplies to models to everything in between, we want to find anything that can help us achieve this goal of learning and playing music!
One thing I have found that is consistent with children regardless of where they live or their social status is that they want to learn and they always love creating music.
Enthusiastic, boisterous, curious, wondering, are all traits I would use to describe these students. I want to nurture those qualities because these are tomorrow's citizens who are our world changers and our stewards of the future. I want to put the tools in their hands they need to be successful at their jobs, becoming responsible citizens who understand what they need to do to ensure tomorrow has a chance to succeed.
My Project
This year I have been asked to open up a music curriculum for our students. We have had none for many years, other than a couple outside attempts to learn dance from a private company which our students could not afford. We are making this part of my science program and are in need of everything to start music! We are beginning rhythm and need things beside pencils!
These students desperately need a creative outlet so they can inspire their academic side by fulfilling their creative side!
Having these instruments and accessories will actually allow us to present a concert for our parents, learn musical notation, and inspire future musicians! This is why I'm requesting Boomwhackers, Soprano Recorders, Melody Bells, Lummi Sticks, and Music Stands.
