Making Movies... Making Learning Meaningful and Fun!

My Students

We are living in a digital world. There's no denying that technological skills are critical for success in today's fast-paced global community. Students must be able to communicate, collaborate, innovate, and wield technology in order to someday fill jobs that, quite frankly, don't exist yet.

I have the most amazing students in the world.

No really, I do. Unfortunately, most of them do not have computers or the Internet at home. In general, they have very little experience with technology. I would LOVE to use movie-making in the classroom to reinforce oral communication skills and technological literacy. My school is considered "high poverty", and many students come from disadvantaged homes. As someone who came from a disadvantaged background, I feel motivated, every day, to set high expectations for my students. I believe that every child can learn, and every child can succeed if we give them the tools they need to soar to new heights. I strive to provide my students with the best I can give. That, of course, involves a whole lot of love, sweat, and tears. It also takes a lot of my own money. Our district has phenomenal administrators, but our budget does not allow them to provide teachers with ANY money to buy materials. Please help me bridge the technology gap!

My Project

Our classroom is in need of a Flip camcorder and tripod to begin making educational movies and pod-casts. Not only will the films reinforce knowledge and skills that my students are learning in my classroom, the films will also help to propel my students towards success in an information-based, technology-driven world. Using green-screen (green sheet) technology and video-editing software, the students will be able to post videos and pod-casts to our classroom website to provide additional support to their peers and reinforce their own learning. It will allow us to document special class projects, student-led conferences, and our yearly Reader's Coffeehouse. Also, each student would work to edit an iMovie showcasing highlights of our year together to make a class DVD for each family. Many of my students don't have computers or Internet service in their homes. I am concerned that this will put them at a disadvantage compared to Internet-savvy kids. Please help me help them!

Some people claim schools are outdated institutions that have not evolved to reflect the world that we are all living in.

In fact, I heard a speaker at our state technology conference lament that, for many students, walking into a classroom is like walking into a time machine. He claimed that kids are immersed in technology outside of school and then, essentially, walk into a 1900s classroom. I want my classroom to be an oasis for kids who, otherwise, won't interactions with computers.
