My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be at recess in elementary school? Many of us remember a challenging game of four-square with a best buddy, playing H-O-R-S-E on the basketball court, or jumping rope until we were out of breath. My students are waiting to make those same memories!

The students, 5th graders, in their last year of elementary school and in need of some great memories, will be using these supplies to be physically active during their recess time.

They have not been dealt the best deck of cards at home. Many of them have just been united with one of their parents after being released from prison for murder or drug convictions, while another parent still resides there. Some others take care of younger siblings, while a single parent works to make a minimal income. Many students have responsibilities beyond what most can imagine, and I would like to make school a time for them to just be kids. The school free/reduce lunch rate is 90% and breakfast is a benefit to every student to ensure learning. Despite the circumstances, our classroom is a "no excuses" environment in which everyone is expected to learn, work hard, and most of all, do their very own best! I would love for the students to be able to be rewarded with a recess of memories!

My Project

Physical activity and learning are directly related: when students perform physical activities, they are able to learn and focus at improved levels. My students deserve to have an active, memory making, recess, but they will also benefit in the classroom. In this time, students should not be standing on a wall waiting for a bell to ring, there is plenty of time for that. They should be playing!

The students will be able to choose hoola hooping with laughter, tossing a football with a buddy, a group game of four-square, or a variety of basketball games, but you are the one that will be making a difference in these students' lives by giving them the equipment to make memories that WILL last a lifetime.
