My Students
My students are terrified to make mistakes. One mistake and they tend to give up on themselves.
Our school has a strong sense of community, having been an academic institution for many, many years.
In fact, it is one of the oldest schools in the country. However, coming from the inner city, my students don't have a lot of academic confidence. They tend to doubt themselves and don't think they are strong enough in mathematics. While they don't always see it though, I know they can achieve greatness.
My Project
With the magic of individual dry erase boards, markers, and erasers, my students can make all the mistakes they'd like to! We are learning Algebra I this year which is all about making connections between tables, equations and graphs. The dry erase boards will allow each student to work at his or her own pace, erase errors, and use a hands-on activity every day in class. In addition, I waste way too much paper handing out duplicates of graph paper because they have made one tiny error on their paper. This project will not only encourage my students to try their best every day, but also save the environment!
Algebra I is the basis for many other math courses my students will take in high school and college.
My students want to be business owners, lawyers, nurses, neurosurgeons, and psychologists, among many others. They need to build the intellectual self-confidence now, so that they can succeed this year, and in their academic futures. Thank you for considering us!
