My Students

This school year, I have the privilege of educating 17 wonderful second graders. We are at a school located in the West Pullman area, on the far south side of Chicago. My classroom is composed of 100% African American students who come from low income homes. I am sure they are faced with many life challenges but their academic life should not be one of them. 7% of my students are reading at the second grade while none (0%) of my students are currently proficient at math. This data is in comparison to the national average. Data such as this is unacceptable and, as a first year educator here, I need to do what it takes so that this does not continue. I believe that all children should be given equity in education. It is a challenge to provide these equal opportunities when unfortunately every school is not funded equally. I'm motivated to bring enriching experiences to my little ones especially when every morning I am greeted by their smiles and their eagerness for knowledge they display.

My Project

Currently 12% of my classroom is proficient in 2nd math compared to the national average. Using data from standardized tests, intensive support is given when I pull small groups of students to address their deficiencies. While I am working with a group of students, the rest of the classroom is working on math centers. The few math centers that they are currently utilizing are ones that are created by me which are laminated black and white copies of activities.

We are in need of a variety of math centers that cover various learning levels and math content areas necessary to strengthen their foundational math skills.

I would like to see my students excited and motivated by colorful hands-on math centers. When they become excited about learning a subject that many fear, it will reflect on how they perform and accept math in their academic and daily lives.
