Making Meaning of Place Value

My students need place value blocks to deepen their understanding of our Base 10 number system.

My Students

Leading educational theorist Jean Piaget once said, "The principal goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done."

I have 60 wonderfully intelligent 5th-grade students who are learning to create true meaning through hands-on mathematics.

Our district motto is "expect to excel." My students expect to excel in their academic lives as well as their personal life. My goal is to give them the tools to truly excel and create new things.

My Project

Place value is an essential math skill that must be conquered before students can unlock harder mathematical concepts. 5th grade is a pivotal point in the education of every mathematician when it comes to Place Value.

Students begin to uncover the meaning of our base ten system and the relationships between numbers within the first few months of school.

One way you can directly help my students is by providing hands-on materials for them to play with building numbers within the Place Value system. These place value blocks will be used predominantly in the first few months of school, but will continue to be used throughout the school year as we develop other skills with multiplication and division.
