Making Mathematicians

Help me give my students hands on practice with math skills catered to their skill level using manipulatives and fun games using the Math Expressions 2018 curriculum.

My Students

We have a very diverse group of 130 second graders. They come from different backgrounds that have a variety of interests, needs, and strengths.

They are active learners that thrive on taking learning into their own hands.

Each classroom has students that are below, above, and anywhere in between in all subject levels. Our students love to be challenged. Some struggling with grasping difficult concepts using only paper and pencil and benefit when using concrete materials to understand abstract ideas.

My Project

These materials will give students additional practice with math skills being taught in whole group lessons. It will provide leveled activities, and targeted reteach, practice, and challenge materials. Having hands-on activities for our students will increase engagement and higher-order thinking skills. Materials will provide targeted practice for each math concept that correlates with tier one instruction. In many classrooms materials will be used to enhance math center activities.

Students that have the opportunity to work with manipulatives and concrete materials increase their ability to understand difficult concepts.

Students will be challenged, and holes in their foundation of understanding will be filled through additional activities. We hope to see math scores increased and foundational skills reinforced as this project will impact all Utah core curriculum in math.Fun games will keep students engaged. This activity pack comes with centers ready to use and will allow teachers to incorporate math centers quickly and easily in their classroom. Materials are durable and will be able to reused throughout the year and in following years. Materials will also be left with second grade teachers at the school so new teachers will have access to the curriculum materials. Our school uses math expressions and will continue to use that curriculum so we will be able to use the curriculum in coming years.
