Compassionate. Energetic. Joyful. My students embody these characteristics and so much more. Every day, they come to school wanting to learn and willing to try. They (and their families) put their trust in me to make learning meaningful, relevant, and engaging. My students thrive when lessons are grounded in context so that they can make connections between the lives they live and the learning they experience.
They deserve opportunities to engage in learning that matters to them, that meets them where they are, and provides them with exactly what they need…With this, they will move mountains.
COVID-19 has highlighted the fact that learning is social - we learn best when we can collaborate with peers, have conversations to make sense of new concepts, and share our thinking. Online learning and physical distancing made this challenging, and as a result, many of our students did not thrive under those conditions.
My requested units are inquiry-based and grounded in contexts that engage students and support connections between math and their everyday lives. Additionally, these units are designed with social constructivism in mind, and guide students through the construction of math concepts through meaningful and "meaty" problems, collaboration, and communication. For example, each unit will engage students in a real world problem. Students will work in teams to think through the problem together, coming up with solutions and eventually presenting their thinking to the class. The social interactions that these units encourage will support my students in constructing meaningful and lasting knowledge about math concepts.
The protractors/compasses will be used by students as they work together to construct ideas about lines and angles, and the chart paper will be used by students so that they can present their thinking.
