Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I'm done!", "I can't do this, I need help!" I have a wide range of students performing at all levels, from far below basic to gifted. They all have needs, but we have very limited supplies.

My students come from a low income urban community in California.

100% of them receive free lunch. We lack materials and supplies because of major budget cuts in the elementary public schools. This has made it difficult to teach and has forced us to use our creativity in how we teach. I have a diverse group of students this year. 85% of my student are Hispanic and 15% are Asian students. I have a mixture of students performing in all ranges, from advanced gifted to far below basic. In addition I have 19 boys and 7 girls. A majority of these students are kinesthetic and visual learners.

My Project

Each year my class is different with new challenges. This year is no different. When I was faced with the challenges of having 19 boys in the classroom with 7 girls, I knew the way I approached math lessons needed to change. With the various degrees of levels in my classroom, I need to provide math reviews and activities that will motivate and challenge the earlier finishers, while reteaching math concepts using different approaches with students that are struggling. As a result, I need math center games that will allow early finishers to work independently, so I can use enough time to reach students who need more support. I also need various manipulative that will help my kinesthetic learners, so they can understand math conceptually. As math is build upon number sense, I hope these games will not only be fun for students, but it will help them to grasp the math concepts easily and reinforce their learning.

For some of my students, math has become nothing more than numbers on papers, please help support my struggling students in helping us purchase math center games and manipulative, so math can be meaningful and fun!
