Expectations on our students in mathematics are growing, especially with the demands of CCSS. We are striving to make math more meaningful for children. Linking math instruction to literature can help to spark students' interest in mathematics and bring meaning to mathematical concepts.
Our community recently faced a devastating tragedy, but our students are amazingly resilient.
They come from a variety of backgrounds. Students' mathematical abilities range from very advanced to below grade level. Several students receive special education services or intervention services for mathematics.
My Project
This project is "part 2" an another project I created to increase our math literature resources in our school literacy center. The books that I am requesting as part of this project will help math instruction to be more meaningful and engaging to students. Literature can spark a child's imagination and motivate them in a way that a typical textbook cannot. Linking math to literature can build on the confidence of students who love books but are reluctant learners in math. Literature can bring context and meaning to mathematical ideas. These books will be available in our literacy center for use by all students. As teachers investigate units of study in math, they will check out related literature. Teachers will use the books as read alouds to introduce or reinforce concepts, and students will have access to the books in a math center so they may continue to explore concepts.
Literature connections will help to strengthen our math instruction and to present content in an engaging and meaningful way.
These books will be available for all students and teachers in our school (K-4). Please help our students discover the wonder and an enjoyment of mathematics through books!
