My Students
My classroom is full of thirty energetic fifth graders who are incredibly creative, inquisitive, and mostly kinesthetic and aural learners. They love to move, sing, dance, and play, so they learn best through hands-on, active learning methods. My students love the latest games and technology, so they are always engaged and excited when we are able to play a game or use technology related to what we are learning.
What I love about my students is that they have fully embraced the growth mindset beliefs and lifestyle we have instilled in our classroom and throughout our school.
Every time they face a challenge in math or get stuck in the "learning pit" they work tremendously hard to get themselves out using the strategies I have taught and modeled for them. Every time they find a mistake, we share it and celebrate how learning from our mistakes helps us grow!
My students have a wide range of skills and abilities in math that spread from third to sixth grade, so being able to differentiate every lesson and activity to give each student exactly what he or she needs is crucial for success in our classroom.
My Project
Fifth grade math can be extremely challenging especially when students have not yet mastered their math facts! I remember having to practice flash cards over and over as an elementary student and I hated having to memorize cards. I love the Power Pens with math quiz cards because it is a new, exciting and different way for students to master their multiplication facts! They get instant feedback from the pen and can feel successful while also having fun.
If students do not have fun, they do not learn, so making math meaningful, interactive, and fun is the key to success and concept mastery for students!
When they are able to play interactive games that help them visualize and create what they are learning, they cannot be stopped! When students groan about having to STOP doing math, I know we are doing something right! The math folder games will give my students so many fun options to practice what they have learned with a partner or in a small group.
