I teach in high need school which is located in a community that has a high level of poverty. I teach second grade to very dedicated students who show a tremendous willingness to learn.
Many of the resources that are available to students in schools that have more funding are not available at my school. We are working really hard to close the achievement gap, but we don't have all the resources we need to do so.
The resources I need are for math. My goal is to make math a magical experience for my students, by providing fun, hands on opportunities for them to learn. This is especially important for my students who struggle to learn math in the traditional way. The items I have requested include large magnetic manipulatives that the students can move around to gain an understanding of place value. I also requested a magnetic kit for fractions that will allow them to see fractions in pie format and in box format. The other item I requested is a math games kit. The kit comes with several games that students can take back to their seat to reinforce skills they are learning. This is a great tool for teaching math because not only is it fun but it is also self paced, allowing students to practice the skill that they personally struggle with.
You have the ability to help my student learn skills that will last their entire lifetime. Math skills are necessary for anyone who is to be a useful member of society. Students get their foundation for mathematics in the early years of elementary school. Without a firm foundation they can not expect to be successful in their future academic careers. Please help make math magical for my students.
