Making Math Fun!

My students need to make math fun, by playing games and using learning tools.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Nielsen's classroom raised $528

My Students

My kindergarten students have a passion in their hearts for discovery and learning. Almost every day one of my students comes up to me excited about something new they've discovered or accomplished. They work so hard to please me and to learn. I love being their teacher.

In our classroom, we learn through play.

Students use online programs to help them learn. We also learn through small group time and discovery centers. My students love using their imagination and coming up with their own ideas. They are creative little geniuses. They inspire me and encourage me to be the very best teacher that I can be every single day.

Although my students are all excited to learn, oftentimes they give up on things easily or they simply say "I can't do it!" This is mostly a lack of confidence. For a lot of my students, kindergarten is their very first year of school, and it can be intimidating sometimes. This year it is my goal to increase my students' confidence in their ability to learn and develop new skills.

My Project

In kindergarten, math is new and exciting. My students are learning to add for the first time. They are also practicing counting to 100. We also learn about 2D and 3D shapes. Although math is exciting, it can be somewhat abstract for little minds.

Kindergartners need tools in their hands to help math make sense to them.

That is why I've applied for this grant. All of the learning tools that I have selected will help my student understand that. I've asked for counting bears to help my students understand that the numbers we count are tied to actual objects. I've asked for dominoes to help them compare numbers. The magnetic numbers will be incredibly helpful in helping students create their own addition problems. I've also asked for several tools to help my students learn their shapes. We will use these tools to build objects with the shapes to see how shapes are in our every day lives. We will also use these shapes to identify the differences between shapes. These items are essential to helping little minds understand mathematics. They need a visual, something in their hands to tie into such an abstract concept.

These tools will be used in whole group and small group teaching. Students will be able to work with the tools as a whole class as well as independently during center rotations. This will give them a chance to learn through direct instruction from me, as well as learning through exploration.

Learning through manipulative tools is the strongest way to help students gain an understanding of math outside the classroom. Because this is my first year teaching, I have very few math manipulative supplies for my kindergartners to use. Please help me make math fun!
