My students need a way to learn math skills through cooperative games.

My Students

As a teacher to 90 fifth graders, many with special needs, I always like to look for new ways to teach math. Fact practice timed tests may work for some, but in my classroom, we like to learn in lots of different ways.

My students like to work in groups and learn from each other.

Sometimes after a class period is complete, I hear them saying things like "That class flew by! That was so much fun! Are we going to do this every day?" These are the comments I like to hear!

My Project

These math games will reach all learning styles. The linguistic learner learns best through writing. The student can write the word and expanded form of a decimal using the decimals place value cards. The kinesthetic learner learns best by doing something. The student can earn money by doing chores and spending their earning on the things they want by playing the Allowance Game. The visual learner learns best with visual aides to guide the learning process. The student can use hands-on manipulatives to learn about volume. The Powers of 10 slider boards will help students visualize the movement of the decimal point when multiplying and dividing.

By providing these games, students can learn in an entirely different way.

This educational experience will benefit students' social skills, motivation and confidence in their learning abilities. Sometimes it is hard to engage students when they can't read word problems or lack the patience to take turns. I feel that math games are a great way for students to interact with each other and learn important math skills all at the same time.
