Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wouldn't it be easier for you to learn about math by using hands-on, physical materials and reading fun books about those topics? My first grade class loves to learn through games, puzzles, and manipulatives, and they're eager to share their learning with family members.

My 30 first-grade students live and go to school in an impoverished neighborhood in an urban Illinois community.

All of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and most are English Language Learners. Many of their families want to help their children be successful in school, but are often unsure how to best extend learning in the home.

My Project

How can I help my students improve their math skills while also empowering families to help their children succeed? By creating take-home math packs! First graders work all year on learning how to accurately tell time and count money. Each take-home math pack will contain a popular children's book on one of these two topics, as well as a game that children and families can play together. All of the games have adaptations to differentiate the activity for a number of ability levels, and the books in the packs have parent notes and ideas for enrichment that parents can also use to further help each child. Students will benefit not only in math skill practice, but also through reading with a family member or loved one.

Your support for this project will provide my students and their families with opportunities to practice key math skills together while also reading from high-quality math-related books.

Thank you for helping math mastery, literacy skills, AND family involvement go hand-in-hand!
