My Students
I teach a great group of kindergarten students at a rural school near the coast of South Carolina. Our school houses Pre-K through fifth grade with a student population of about 800 students.
Although our elementary school is one of the biggest in our district, we have a family feeling to it that visitors notice when they walk through the front doors.
We have a total of six kindergarten classes. With a school this big, our population is extremely diverse. We have very low economic families in our community, but these children are always eager to learn and ready to overcome obstacles. I want to help my students who are just beginning their school careers go even further and really push themselves. Your donations will make that dream possible for my classroom.
My Project
In our school, we use the Daily 3 structure to organize our math block. During this time, students spend time at several "stations" and work independently or with partners on strengthening number sense and math skills while I am working with small groups or individual students on skills. After several weeks of using the same materials, the students get tired and bored with the games that are in the math stations. Not only do they become uninterested in math stations available, their behaviors begin to reflect their complacency.
According to Sophocles, "One learns by doing a thing; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try." It is important to be able to spice up these stations and give the students a little variety.
Adding these new games to our Daily 3 stations will not only excite the students, it will get them engaged, and motivate them to explore math through use of new games and manipulatives which will directly impact their learning.
