Making Literature Come to Life in Our Special Ed Class!

My Students

It has been said that books open our eyes to the world around us. My students have significant disabilities that create barriers to accessing literature. They need listening center materials so they can have their eyes, and ears, opened to the world of reading!

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Due to low enrollment and changes within our school district, our school was one step away from being closed last year. Despite the challenges that my students face, they are incredibly resilient. The seven students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, desire to learn, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

We are requesting a variety of books on CD so that my students can listen to books and follow along while myself and my classroom assistants work with other children. These books on CD will foster independence within each little learner as they learn how to use the materials and follow the routine by themselves. Additionally, we are requesting a listening and following directions activity center. The listening activities on these CDs will help my students to understand concepts such as positional words and "wh" questions about illustrations. Of course, none of these materials will be useful without CD players! We also need 4 individual CD players so these materials can be accessed appropriately.

The materials we are requesting will help my students become more independent, expose them to literature in a new way, and help refine and teach new skills.

Please help open the world of reading to my seven deserving learners!
