This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting a variety of stickers, paper cutouts, and cardstock to use in my English classes to help make lessons engaging for students. For example, when we read Animal Farm this Spring, students will use the stickers to recreate the scene when the windmill is destroyed, closely reading the novel for details on where the animals are and what happens. By recreating the scene, students will have a better understanding of the plot and the significance of the situation. When we read Macbeth, students will analyze Macbeth's change in character from the beginning of the play to when he becomes king by making crowns to display, and recording their evidence. In my AP English class, students will use the hexagon cutouts and punch to do hexagonal thinking activities, which involve making connections between themes, characters, concepts, and symbols. It is an interactive activity that gets students thinking beyond the obvious.
Over my 20 years of teaching, I've learned that students learn best when they are engaged and involved in the lesson.
Having these supplies, students will help students make connections and become more active participants in their learning. The supplies also add an element of fun -- something I believe is just as important as rigor in the classroom.
