Help me give my students a more positive experience with literature. By introducing them to high interest text, they will be able to see reading as a part of their own identity.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are incredibly insightful, and full of joy. Despite not always feeling successful or capable in academic work, they set goals for themselves to lead them to personal growth. Although some of my students have previously struggled with reading, they have begun to discover their own reading interest and habits. Ultimately, they are learning to engage with, and be engaged by connecting what they read to their own life experiences. This means they bring so much thoughtfulness into our classroom conversations about literature.
My Project
Some of my students are already interested in reading. However, the majority have shared that they see reading as something they MUST do, rather than something they CHOOSE to do.
I know that so much of the joy that comes from reading is about finding texts that reflect your own experience with content that you can discuss with others.
Reading as a social activity makes it that much more enjoyable and come alive in ways that would not happen without belonging to a community of readers.
I know that by creating the opportunity for students to engage in literature circles, and have the choice of reading high interest books, they will begin to see reading as something they enjoy doing instead of something they are forced to do.
