Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When was the last time you used math? Chances are that the last time you played a game you were quietly doing math in your head. Games are intrinsically motivating. My students often lack interesting working to practice their math skills, often forced to practice a skill by the 'drill and kill

My students are fourth graders who are curious about the world around them.

They each have different skills and abilities. The class average reading level is 3rd grade but, several students are at 6th grade and others at 2nd grade levels. Consequently they value having differentiation in instruction to be able to treat their needs and abilities individually. The school my students attend is a k-5 school in an urban area of California.

My Project

These games were selected for the independent learner in mind. These math 'wraps' are games that students use independently, perfect for the student who needs some time to work alone. Each wrap contains questions on one side of the board and answers on the opposite side. The student uses string to match up the correct question with answer. When complete they can look at the back of the card to checked the pattern the string made to see how many answers they got correct. The boards use student's sense of touch to help them study. Because of a need to experience and play at this age, these study games are more appealing then flashcards or worksheets. I have selected boards that teach different levels of math. The Other boards for fractions and multiplication because these are the skills most students need to practice. Additional boards focus on slightly higher math skills, great for my higher achieving students who tend to finish work early and need more challenging materials.

Being interested in a subject is the quickest way to learn it.

It is also the best way to remember it long term. Games tap into student's nature fondness for play, competition, and rewards. Will you help prepare students for a lifelong love of math?
