Making Learning Fun with Games and Graphic Novels!

My students need graphic novels to hold their interest and a laminator to make math games for the classroom!

My Students

The students in my classrooms all come from different backgrounds, family dynamics, socioeconomic statuses, religions, and belief systems. Some have never known hunger, and others don't know where their next meal will come from. Some get home and take care of younger brothers and sisters after school.Some have stay at home moms that are there to help with homework when they get home.Some have parents that work two and three jobs to make sure their needs are met. Some have computers at home. Others are homeless.Some are the first English speakers in their families. However, my students all have one thing in common--they come to school each day, bright eyed, and ready to learn. I draw inspiration from their enthusiasm to tackle each day, no matter what other circumstances they are dealing with.

My Project

With all there is around to entertain kids these, we are having to take teaching to a new level to keep children interested in reading and math.

One way to do that is through texts that they like, and math games they enjoy playing.

The students in my class love graphic novels. They can't get enough of reading them! As I was assessing my classroom library, I realized there was a shortage of those books! I would like to remedy that with this project. I have asked for a variety of graphic novels that will appeal to the young readers in my class. I have asked for several books from many different series, including, Dogman, Baby Mouse, Dragon Masters, Puppy Pals, The Lunch Lady, Eerie Elementary, Captain Underpants, Squish, The Bad Guys, and more. If you want to get better at something, you practice. To become a better reader, you read. In order to build better readers, and kids who love reading, I need to have a classroom library stocked with books like these that my kids can't wait to get their hands on!

My kids also love to play math games. Just as I said with earlier--in order to get better at something, you have to practice. As opposed to doing worksheets, I have found it much more beneficial (and fun) for my children to practice their math skills using math games. In order to save resources, and make games that will stand the test of time, I would like a laminator so that I can make sure these games will hold up through lots of use! Games that are laminated not only have the benefit of standing the test of time, but children can also show their work on them using whiteboard markers! It's a win/win!
