Making Learning Comfortable for Everyone!

My students need alternative places to sit other than their desks. I want them to be able to be able to feel comfortable in their learning environment.

My Students

I am a teacher at a very large middle school with around 1,500 students. I teach 7th grade this year and personally have 180 energetic, motivated students who enter my classroom on a daily basis.

I teach three science classes a day on a 90-minute block schedule on an A-B schedule with six classes in all.

Each class is filled with different energy levels and different capabilities. I have students with learning disabilities, ADHD, big hearts, and gifted abilities. Each of my students are different and I am trying to individualize their education as much as possible.

My students are interested in many things, including sports, music, and art. We incorporate all of these things into our science class, especially 30 second dance parties to celebrate our successes. My students are silly, social, loving, and, above all, motivated.

My Project

Lately, while students have been doing individual and group activities, I've been allowing them to spread out in the classroom and create their own learning space. The issue with this is, they normally end up on the floor. This isn't an ideal situation for any student. Classroom floors aren't known for being pristine.

While my students don't complain, I know being on the floor isn't always their best option.

My idea is to have easily-movable chairs that the students can use to create a comfortable learning space that fits them and their learning needs. Students learn best when they enjoy themselves and I believe these new chairs will achieve that.

Not only can the chairs be used to create a comfortable learning area, they can also be used as incentives. For the students who earn it, they can choose a chair to do their warm-up in or read a book when they finish their science work early. Students will be much more engaged and willing to work when they are trying to earn something.
