Making it Tactile: From Optics to Evolution

My students need an animal survey kit and dissection materials to explore the animal kingdom, and a light box, lenses and chemicals build their own cameras and film.

My Students

Is dissection one of the only things you remember from high school biology? Have you ever built your own working camera, complete with handmade lenses and film? These are the experiences that make science engaging and memorable.

My students attend a small alternative school on an Indian Reservation, where they face the daily onslaught of poverty and disenfranchisement that pervades so many reservation communities.

Too often, their school experiences have left them thinking that Science is boring,and book-based material that has little relevance to their lives. All that changes when they are given the chance to explore and follow their curiosity. Not only are they excited and engaged, but they are doing the real work of scientists. These are the moments when I see hope and energy come into their lives.

My Project

With your help, my Biology and Physics students can have these experiences. In Biology, students who have only known the desert will get the chance to explore the bewildering, fascinating diversity of life. And then they will get to do the real and unforgettable (and a little gross) work of dissecting specimens and figuring out how they are related. In Physics, my students will be able to use simple experiments with lenses and chemistry to discover the science behind photography. Then they will use their knowledge to design and build cameras from the ground up--complete with homemade film and adjustable focus.

With your support, my students will not just see science differently-they'll have a whole new outlook on the world around them.

Their classroom experiences will help them see the amazing questions and puzzles that surround them, and give them the skills, creativity and confidence to do this exploration on their own.
