My students need bins, wood pieces, tools, plastic tubing , and hard ware for a Maker Space area. These materials will be used for creating original products, and using critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems.
My students are a diverse group of cognitively gifted learners from grades 3-7. I work in a suburban school with a population of about twelve hundred students. Due to the fact that we are a relatively small school district with only one elementary, one middle, and one high school our budget per program is very lean. Last year our school district was informed that we will be receiving much less funding from the state due to fiscal cuts. This is greatly affecting our budget for the upcoming school year. For the past three school years I have depleted my budget by October.
My students are very interested in making things!
The newest trend in education is the Makerspace. Teachers and students alike enjoy creating high quality projects while solving real-world problems. I would like to set up a makerspace in my classroom. The upfront cost of this project is beyond my ability to support.
My Project
My students often enjoy making creative projects from scratch. They have loads of imagination and talent and need an outlet. The maker space supplies and robotics kit I have asked for will enable my students to utilize 21st Century Skills to solve real-world problems. They will be able to utilize the tools to assist with cutting, hammering, and building their creations. The various other materials I requested such as the wire pack, wooden shapes, and electrical components will be used to create their projects.
Keeping supplies on-hand for the endless projects my students are engaged in can be difficult to keep up with.
I have made many trips to the store to replenish the supplies. Many of the materials are not easy to find in a typical store.
It is my hope that I can work towards keeping the supplies plentiful if I start with a bountiful supply. I am planning on setting this area up as a nice surprise for my students. I can't wait!
