My Project
How do we learn? Is it from books, notes, and lecture? Or can we find a way to create, unique hands-on experiences that ask our students to find learning in ways they never thought possible?
I believe that encouraging STEM education and bringing unique hands-on learning experiences into our school is a vital part of helping our students, both academically, socially, and in preparation for the world beyond high school.
I am a high school science teacher from a large urban fringe school district. Our school has roughly 80% of students on free or reduced lunch. Due to the economy, funds are often short at home, as well as at school. Resources to extend learning opportunities are hard to come by with funding cuts coming year after year. I want to be able to give my students the world, but I only have the resources to give them a slice of it. This is where you come in!
Over the past year, our district was lucky enough to have our community pass a technology bond to bring a fantastic makerspace to our school. We are set up to bring innovative, creative and fantastic hands-on learning to our students. The addition of a 3D printer will go a long way to helping my students learn about STEM, 3D design, prototyping and engineering.
The use of this printer will help my students extend their learning opportunities and hopefully spark the "Maker" in each of them, encouraging them to move forward as independent thinkers, risk-takers and someone who isn't afraid to get dirty every once in a while.
