This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your first nonfiction book? I do. It was the story of Anne Frank. Maybe yours was about Rosa Parks, Benjamin Franklin or Pearl Harbor. Historical literature is an important part of learning about history and culture. My kids have almost no exposure to nonfiction. Want to help?

I am a 6th grade Social Studies teacher in a Title I school in an urban setting.

All of my students are low income, at risk of dropping out, and many are English learners. I want the best for these kids, and it so easy for them to fall through the cracks. I know they are capable of becoming successful high school graduates.

My Project

We need a selection of nonfiction and historical fiction books. Some of the books I am requesting are Otto Von Bismarck: Iron Chancellor of Germany (Wicked History), Leopold II: Butcher of the Congo (Wicked History), Julius Caesar: Dictator for Life (Wicked History), Adolf Hitler (Wicked History), Joseph Stalin (Wicked History), Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice. Social Studies isn't just what you learn in a textbook. It's the people behind the history. If I can make these stories come alive, I can engage my students in meeting the people behind the history. Nonfiction literature is an integral part of Social Studies, but is not included for the most part in our textbooks or curriculum package. I need contemporary, engaging non-fiction books that are appropriate for the 6th grade student.
