Making History Fun! Building a Community and Learning through Games!

My students need board games for a Family Engagement night focused on building community, History vocabulary, and social skills.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Coomber's classroom raised $485

My Students

My students include 7th and 8th graders whose families have chosen to attend a charter school focusing on Arts & Personalized Learning. They come from all around the southern areas of San Diego County.

I love knowing that I'm building the next generation of artists, performers, and thinkers.

I want to be able to provide them each with the environment and resources that they need to grow and thrive.

There's so many students that can be truly engaged in their learning thanks to Arts integration. Some of my students are wonderfully talented at a Fine Art, Dance, or Music, and some of them are just beginning to cultivate an interest. My goal is to help each of them reach their fullest potential, through constantly integrating art into their learning.

I teach History, but am also the supervisor for our "Board Games & RPG Club" as well as "Student Council." Moreover, I teach electives: Comics & Board Games design.

My Project

I teach over 140 students at an Arts Academy in Otay Ranch. I teach History, but I also lead a twice-a-week board game club. This club focuses on building students' communication skills, social strategies, and feelings of belonging. In this Donor's Choose project, I have chosen a selection of board games meant to be played by students and their families at a 'community gaming night' that I will hold in my classroom several times a year. I already have a few board games that I've purchased with my own money for these sort of events, but not nearly enough to accommodate each students' families.

History class should be a co-op adventure!

A big focus of my History classroom this year is making learning fun, as well as building a community among the very diverse students in my class. Afterschool board game days will help students and their parents bond with other members of the classroom. Hopefully these games will provoke discussions and sharing of historical knowledge within my students' families. These will be especially effective for my English Language Learner students due to their visual supports and natural engagement.

Each of these board games choices are very deliberate. Through playing them, students will build History vocabulary, Geographical knowledge, and a broad overview of the time periods that we study in the 7th and 8th grade. They have use both at a 'family night', and in my daily classroom instruction. Finally, they will be a boon to my bi-weekly Board Game and RPG Club!
