My Students

The students that I teach come from a variety of racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Due to their diverse backgrounds, they are encouraged to share and celebrate their differences. They truly enjoy sharing their traditions, languages, etc.

My students mean the world to me, and for that reason, I want to open up the world to them!

As readers, many of our students are reading below grade level. They can be reluctant to open books, so we try to find texts that they can see themselves in, as these are the kinds of stories that truly motivate them to read. They love to share when a character or experience is familiar to them. Additionally, a number of my students are English Language learners or come from an impoverished background, therefore they struggle to find their place in the world they are living in now. Building their confidence and love of learning is the most important way I can help them feel successful and important.

My Project

The genre of historical fiction is often one of our high-interest units in fourth grade. Students love to learn about history's struggles and triumphs. Because the subtopics within this unit often highlight the cultural/racial backgrounds of many of our students, they can see themselves in these stories. They see the positive impact and differences they can make in the world.

This unit allows my students to think deeply, question the world around them, and make connections to their own lives.

Many of the texts, specifically the chapter books, are at more advanced reading levels which can be challenging for struggling readers. This can be frustrating and make these readers feel left out of this unit. Enter...picture books! Picture books allow these students to work in a variety of accessible reading configurations, such as reading independently, shared reading, paired reading, etc. Also due to their shorter length, they allow students to read a variety of stories on a subtopic to help support comprehension strategies such as theme. The pictures also help all students, struggling or not, picture a time period with which they aren't familiar. In turn, students build background knowledge which allows them to then read the more complex chapter books.

My hope is that students will take what they have learned in this unit to treat others with respect and make the world a better place. In year's past, I have seen them make references to both historical facts and characters when dealing with conflict.
