Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The characteristics of my class that influence instructional strategies are both ethnic and cultural, we blend computer science and literacy to make students think about the bridges they are building in their communities. As part of our STEAM initiative, this class explores computer science and technology. It is a blended environment as students work online and in class. Because of the diverse linguistic, cultural norms and expectations, I used concrete materials to assist students in grasping concepts in computer science to connect to their STEAM classes. They build Binary Machines and Sound sensors that work on Aurdino. They use 555 processors to control LEDs and We build cardboard computers to stimulate the next generation of computers. Many of my students do not speak English in their communities, so having them understand coding and computing makes them leaders in their communities. They are a joy to teach and a challenge with diverse cultural needs and possibilities for the future.
My Project
I will attend a program at Indiana University Bloomington from July 15-20, where I will develop the skills to incorporate making into my pedagogical toolkit. The aim of this project is the integrating of maker education principles and philosophies into core curriculum that will help and support students in my classroom. Bringing a Maker workspace to a Bronx classroom will enhance learning and maker ideals into our STEM program and bring equality and access to an underserved population by giving students the access to electronics and a variety of other inexpensive low-and high-tech materials and equipment. Opening the doors to making for my students is an essential 21st century skill.
