My students need high quality compasses to create geometric art! We will use these tools to explore and create geometric constructions.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Abby's classroom raised $269

My Students
Our students DO mathematics in the classroom. To us, that means solving real problems and explaining the thinking behind strategies to each other. Real problems require real supplies.
Our school is a transfer high school.
This means that we accept students who, for a variety of reasons, were not successful in their previous high school. Many of our students have taken the same math class a few times and failed. Students feel unsuccessful at math and unsure of themselves in sharing answers. In our classrooms, students are encouraged to think creatively. Strategies, as opposed to answer-getting, are encouraged. Students have a voice as we design curriculum that meets their math needs and is relevant.
My Project
Two years ago, I studied how to create Islamic Art as seen in the Alhambra (Spain) and Morocco. For hundreds of years, artisans have passed down the skills to create perfect designs that contain complicated and beautiful mathematics. Students will learn traditional geometric concepts by creating these drawings themselves. They will describe each design geometrically and write proofs that analyze the relationships between the shapes, lines, and angles.
Students will then take their mathematical art to be displayed at a local gallery.
Using the compass tools purchased here, students will be able to use mathematics to create aesthetically pleasing artwork. These drawings will be analyzed mathematically and shared with the greater community.
