My Students
My students need materials for learning centers. They have such a thirst for knowledge that is truly inspiring. They enter my class each morning excited to learn. Their days are filled with teamwork, curiosity, technology, learning through play, practicing skills and concepts, and more curiosity.
I have a class of 25 gifted and talented kindergarten students from a school in Whitestone, Queens.
In our class we have many English Language Learners who are just starting to speak English. For others, this is their first experience in a school setting. They are learning to form relationships with each other. Through learning centers, they begin to socialize, make friends, learn how to speak English, build true friendships and build confidence in themselves.
My Project
The transition from Pre-K to kindergarten can often be a difficult one. Students are used to playing in fake kitchens, taking long lunches in the classroom, and taking naps. In kindergarten, we expect these little ones to work so hard throughout the entire day without the same luxuries as Pre-K. I am asking for materials for hands-on learning centers such as a set of boxed cards, cans of playdoh, 72 glitter glue pens, 60 gel pens, and 6 craft punches. With these materials, I hope to maintain the playful environment that our little ones love. With the stationary and gel pens my students will be able to have a writing center, where they could write letters to their families, to each other or just practice writing. The hole punch tools and gel pens can also be used for an art center in which kids can be creative and make different kinds of artwork. The playdoh and playdoh pieces will support our playdoh center. Playdoh is excellent for all children, especially for children with occupational therapy needs and sensory needs as it strengthens their hands and helps with writing and motor skills.
This project will have such a positive impact on my classroom.
I truly feel that the best way to learn is to have fun in the process and these materials will help my children to do so. Not only will they serve as an incentive for great behavior but they will aid in my teaching and will enhance the overall classroom environment. They will help build relationships that will last a lifetime, help with building social skills and make school a fun place to be.
